Wolffpack dodges elimination, wins annual Shorts tournament

The Wolffpack took home the annual Whitman Shorts dodgeball title Feb. 29 after a fierce competition among 22 teams.

The Wolffpack, composed of mostly football seniors plus coach Daniel Wolff, fought its way through four rounds in the single round elimination tournament before facing off against the Dodgeball Club after Team USA fell out of the three-way double round elimination finals. The last match eventually came down to just a few Wolffpack players facing off against the Dodgeball Club’s Ryan Davison. The Pack prevailed when Wolff stepped up to the dividing line and fired a laser shot at Davison, who failed to dodge it.

“When it was just down to them, I knew Dave was screwed,” Wolffpack member Ari Kapner said. “Honestly, I can’t even describe the way that I feel about the win. It’s like a waterfall splashing my face, the most insane feeling I’ve ever had. I was a little surprised that we won, we didn’t really have the athleticism that some other teams had. But we had the heart.”

The Wolffpack has competed in four Shorts dodgeball tournaments, but this is its first overall win. Pack members carried their trophies around school the next day in pride of their achievement.

Despite Shorts advisor Geoff Schaefer’s warning announcement that there would be zero tolerance for players competing on multiple teams, many managed to do so without getting caught. But unlike in last year’s tournament, when at one point two competing teams shared five players, the side swapping had little effect on the competition this year.

A fair number of spectators and players filled the stands at the start of the tournament, but many left as more teams fell out of competition, and very few remained to see the Wolffpack’s victory.

Shorts raised about $500 from the tournament, executive producer Ben Page said. The Shorts staff plans to spend the money on new film equipment and donations to charities, he added.

“A lot of people came out and had a fun time, and we raised a good amount of money,” Page said. “It was a successful year.”

Honestly, the Wolff Pack just looked like a bunch of Atletes out there. There really was nothing anything anybody could do.
