The girls basketball team won its first playoff game, 62-49, against the 3-20 Magruder Colonels, Feb. 24.
The Vikes came out strong, hitting a majority of their mid range shots. They had an 18-14 lead heading into the second.
However in the second, the Colonels defense stepped up their intensity and held the Vikes to three points. With the Colonel’s offense pushing transition, the team was able to gain a 24-21 lead going into halftime.
After the halftime break, the Vikes half-court offense lit up the court, scoring 26 points compared to the Colonels 17.
In the fourth quarter both teams defenses again stepped up, but the Vikes were still able to score 15 en route to beating the Colonels 62-49.
Guard Rachel Sisco again led the Vikes scoring, with 18 points including four three-pointers. Guard Alex Purdy contributed four three-pointers of her own and a free throw for 13 total points.
The team hopes to advance further in playoffs when they travel to Gaithersburg to play the undefeated Trojans, Feb. 27.
It was a great win for us,” forward Linn Bumpers said. “Gaithersburg will be a really tough challenge but hopefully we can beat them and go deep into playoffs.”
