The hockey team was eliminated from the playoffs Feb. 23 with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Atholton Raiders.
The Raiders started off the game strong, scoring their first goal only minutes into the game. Later in the period, a miscommunication in the Vikes’ defense led to another Raiders goal.
The Vikes fought back, however, scoring two unanswered goals. The first goal came minutes into the second period, when forward Lucas Karron scored from the feed by defenseman Aidan Neustadtl. Early in the third period, forward Jeff Marr scored the Vikes’ second goal to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither team scored another goal during the remainder of regulation and the game was sent into overtime.
The Vikes controlled the overtime period, holding the puck in the Raider’s defensive zone for long stretches. Raiders goalie Tommy Pappas made save after save to keep the Vikes off the scoreboard. With just over a minute remaining in overtime, the Raiders managed to get the puck into the Vikes’ defensive zone and shoot the puck past goalie Matt Bruns.
The loss eliminated the Vikes from the playoffs and sent the Raiders to the state championship game.
