The hockey team defeated the Wootton Patriots, 3-1, Feb. 2, bringing its record to 8-1.
The first period remained scoreless, with both teams playing well on their defensive ends of the ice.
The Vikes got off to an early start in the second period when forward Hunter Marder scored off assists by Jeff Marr and Dustin Gray only three minutes into the period.
The Vikes continued to look strong at both ends of the ice in the third period. In the middle of the period, forward Alexander Gandolfo shot the puck past the Patriots goalie, giving the Vikes a 2-0 lead.
The Patriots scored with three minutes remaining in the game, but the Vikes sealed their victory when forward Andy Dexter scored an unassisted goal on a power play as the clock ran down to the final seconds.
Marr said he was impressed by the determination and teamwork he saw on the ice.
“We are working hard and playing well as a team and as a result we’re winning against quality opponents,” he said. “We hope to continue that in our upcoming games.”
The team looks to add to its three-game winning streak when it takes on the defending state champion Churchill Bulldogs Feb. 10. at Cabin John. The Bulldogs are the only team the Vikes have lost to this season, having fallen to Churchill 4-3 Jan. 6.
