The boys basketball team beat the 6-3 Churchill Bulldogs, 64-55, Jan. 3, in a surprise upset to improve its record to 3-6.
The Vikes were down by a slim deficit for much of the game, and only grabbed the lead by four points at the end of the third quarter with a score of 44-40. The Vikes were able to gain momentum with accurate shooting and rough defense, while the Bulldogs were hampered by their consistently shaky performance at the free throw line. The Vikes widened their lead in the fourth quarter, eventually topping the Bulldogs by nine points.
Forward Andrew Castegnetti racked a career-high 19 points, while guard Liam Hatch made his regular season debut after sitting out the beginning of the season due to a shoulder injury. The victory was an important one, Hatch said.
“It’ll be really good for us,” he said. “Churchill is one of the top teams in the county. It’s a big confidence booster.”
Next, the Vikes take on 6-3 rivals the B-CC Barons at home Jan 6.
