Girls basketball falls to WJ, drops to 4-2

The girls basketball team lost, 46-42, to the 5-2 Walter Johnson Wildcats Dec. 21, lowering its record to 4-2.

The Vikes took an early 6-2 lead, but were overtaken by strong Wildcat shooters in the second quarter. The first half ended with the Wildcats up 25-17.

The Vikings came back strong in the second half, scoring 11 consecutive points, including a three-pointer by guard Alex Purdy, to give them a 28-25 lead. The teams volleyed baskets and were neck and neck by the fourth quarter.

The Vikes’ offense grew less and less accurate as the end of the game neared, and the Wildcats maintained a 45-40 lead up until the final moments of the game. Forward Angelica Ceccone fired off a layup with ten seconds left to narrow the Vikes’ deficit to three points, but the Wildcats gained an extra point with a foul shot to bring the final score to 46-42.
