Triangle Blog: Skiers all flurried up with nowhere to go

If you’re planning on going skiing this winter, it looks like going West is going to be your only option, and even then it’s not all that great.

Whitetail's webcam reveals the poor state of its runs, most of which have little snow on them. Photo from SkiWhitetail.com.

According to AP Environmental Science teacher Kelly Garton, this is going to be a La Nina year, which means that the Northeast will be very cold but will have little snow.

As of now, our local mountain Whitetail is still not open because it has not received a single flake of snow.  Rumors are it will open sometime next week but that would require a lot of manmade snow.

Even the West is having a bad year.  Mountains that usually have around 50 inches this time of year only have 25.  For those going on the Breckenridge trip, things are looking bleak. Only 50 runs out of their 155 are open and the forecast is not calling for any snow for a while.

So for all you skiers and boarders out there, turn your pajamas inside out and practice your snow dance because you’re going to need all the help you can get.
