The boys basketball team beat the 0-2 Wheaton Knights, 66-49, Dec. 9, evening its record to 1-1.

The Vikes lost the tip-off, but guard Jake Harrison managed to get the first point off a foul shot. The teams exchanged baskets and possessions quickly during the first half, with the aggressive Knights defense often fouling the Viking offense. The half ended with the Vikes leading narrowly 30-29.
The Vikings returned from halftime reenergized and quickly took control of the game. Center Jemal Cheatham electrified the court, posting 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks. Harrison also made several hard drives to the net and recorded 15 points. The Vikes ended the game with a wide lead of 66-49. The game marked coach Chris Lun’s 100th victory.
Next, the Vikes are away as they take on the 0-1 Quince Orchard Cougars Dec. 12.

Congrats to Coach Lun. I was at the State semis and state championship game back in ’06 when we beat Eleanor Roosevelt by one. I don’t know how many people read this site, but if you’re a student at WWHS, don’t take the basketball team and Coach Lun for granted. Please go out and support the team and make it as tough as possible for any team to play at Whitman.
When we won the national championship, we had around 7,000 people show up wearing black. Eleanor Roosevelt probably had 1,500-2,000 at the most. And because our crowd wanted that win more than anything, I think we lit a fire in our team and helped them get that victory. I would like nothing more than to see Whitman rise to prominence in basketball again. I truly believe that this school is a basketball school and the fans should not forget that.
