Senior Abby Fisher was named one of the five Washington, DC area high school student-athlete winners of the PCA Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarships.

Fisher won a $1,000 scholarship for exemplifying the following qualities, as stated by the PCA: personal mastery (making oneself better), leadership (making one’s teammates better) and honoring the game (making the game better).

Fisher is a member of both the wrestling team and the varsity softball team. After a family friend informed her of the scholarship, Fisher applied by writing three essays describing how she showcases each of the qualities listed above.

“I thought the idea of the scholarship sounded a lot like my ideals, so applying seemed right,” Fisher said.

In July, she found out that she was one of 26 finalists for the Washington DC area and was invited to the awards dinner Oct. 6.

The event included remarks from PCA trainer Mark Wiggins and featured speaker Bobby Moran, a former Georgetown University athlete and current PCA trainer.

All finalists had to have a speech ready to go in case they won the award.  When her name was called as one of the winners, Fisher was nervous but excited.

“Initially, I was freaking out cause I didn’t think I was actually going to have to say my speech that I wrote part of after school the day of the dinner,” Fisher said. “But I was also very happy to receive the award.”

Fisher’s classmate, swimmer Victoria Kuhn, was also one of the 26 finalists from the DC area.
