Boys soccer defeats Magruder in overtime, raises record to 5-1

The boys soccer team defeated the defending state champion Magruder Colonels 2-1 in an overtime thriller Sept. 21, improving its record to 5-1.

The Vikes came out strong, scoring the first goal of the game off defender Kyle Tong’s left boot twenty minutes into the game.

Great defending and goalkeeping on both sides kept the rest of the game scoreless until the 73rd minute, when Magruder capitalized on a penalty after Tong left the game with a knee injury.

With under a minute left, forward Emmanuel Kanneh received the ball off a cross in front of the net, but couldn’t produce a goal. The miss sent the game into overtime.

The Colonels had a chance to score on a breakaway in the 83rd minute, but failed, leaving the first overtime period scoreless. During the 96th minute, captain Stephen Rodan sent the ball to Kanneh, who turned the opportunity into a breakaway goal, giving the Vikes the 2-1 victory.

“I was very excited about that winning goal,” Kanneh said.  “I saw Stephen [Rodan] so I just made my run and looked up and saw the keeper coming and told myself to keep my shot low.”

The Vikes travel to Kennedy to face the 1-0-1 Cavaliers Sept. 30.
