Field hockey won its first game of the season, 1-0, against the 1-1 Sherwood Warriors Sept. 15, improving its record to 1-1.
The Vikes set themselves up with many opportunities to pull ahead in the first half, but overcrowding of the box and unlucky shots prevented them from converting their chances into goals.
On the other side of the field, great goalkeeping by Melissa Kantor kept the Warriors off the scoreboard, and the half ended 0-0.
During the break, coach Lindsey Weller gave the team pointers, instructing the girls to separate on the field.
The team still came out slightly sluggish at the opening of the second half, and with about 15 minutes remaining on the clock, Weller called a timeout to talk things over. Kantor, who is a captain, stepped up to inspire her teammates with the slogan she has written under her pads, “tomorrow is today.”
Following the timeout, the Vikes came out energetic and finally showed signs of their potential to dominate this season.
The team effectively spaced out on offense and set up many quality shots off corners, and about halfway through the second half, attacker Sammy Tozzi deked the goalie and scored the only goal of the night to secure the Vikes’ victory.
The team looks for their second win of the season on the road against the 4-1 Richard Montgomery Rockets Sept. 19.
