Under the direction of Christopher Gerken, students from Whitman and other nearby schools will participate in Theater Unlimited DC’s summer production of the musical Rent July 22 and 23.
The performance will take place at Whitman, and tickets will be sold at the door. Rehearsals start on July 6 and are mainly in the evening.

One of the more controversial musicals, Rent follows the different stories of eight friends struggling with various social issues, such as sexual orientation, class differences and HIV/AIDS.
Senior Alex Xourias will play Mark, a young filmmaker who decides to make a documentary of 1989 to 1990. Xourias believes the edgier aspect of Rent makes the show more challenging.
“The incorporation of relevant issues, like the AIDS epidemic and equality, as well as the use of various styles of music, really enhance the show for the audience,” he said. “It is just so helpful to leave your comfort zone and experience new things.”
Junior Grace Laboy will play Maureen, Mark’s ex-girlfriend who dumps him for a lawyer named Joanne. Laboy can also relate to the challenge of playing a more difficult role.
“I think playing Maureen will require me to open up,” she said. “Maureen is a lesbian, and since I’m not, I’m going to need to really get into character every time I step onto stage.”
Junior Ani Carlson, who has roles as multiple characters, looks to Gerken’s leadership for a personal touch to the musical.
“I’m excited because Chris is open to doing new things and taking risks when putting together productions,” she said.
With a passionate cast and a renowned director, Rent is sure to be a hit.
“I know it’s going to be a blast,” Laboy said. “The cast is not only talented, but also an amazing group of people.”
