Baseball takes second loss of season

The baseball team lost to the Gaithersburg Trojans, 5-3, dropping their record to 5-2 on the season on April 6.

Starting pitcher Michael Flack took the mound for the Vikes in search of his fourth win on the young season.  Flack recorded three quick Trojan (6-1) outs for an easy first inning.

Center fielder James Dionne started off the home half of the inning with a walk.  Dionne stole second base and advanced to third when short stop Sam Avayou grounded out to second.  Flack helped out his own cause by singling under the second baseman’s glove to bring Dionne in for the first run of the game.

Third baseman Paul Balland and left fielder Drew Aherne walked to load the bases with only one out in the inning.  Designated hitter Michael Yang was walked to first, which brought courtesy runner Ben Page home before the inning ended on two Viking strikeouts.

Flack continued pitching well when he recorded his first strikeout of the game to start the second inning.  After a flyout to Dionne, second baseman Andrew Castagnetti bare handed a ground ball and fired to first baseman Dan Duffy to keep the Trojans off the scoreboard.

Avayou singled up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the second, but he was caught stealing to end the inning.

Trojan outfielder Stephen Lee doubled to left field for the first Gaithersburg hit of the game to begin the third.  Lee advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a pass ball to put the Trojans on the board.  Outfielder Kevin Menso walked and reached third on an overthrow while he was stealing second base.

Outfielder Zack Fetters laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that scored Menso.  Fetters was safe at first on the play and would eventually score on a single by shortstop Max Heldman to put the Trojans up 3-2.  The Trojans advanced two runners into scoring position, but Flack caught a weak pop-up and fired to Balland, who applied the tag to Heldman, for the inning ending double play.

Balland and Aherne both walked again with one out in the bottom of the third.  Yang doubled to right field, but Balland was gunned down at home for the second out.  However, a wild pitch would allow Aherne to score and knot the game up at three.

Both teams would get a base runner in the fourth inning, but both of the runners would be stranded to end the inning.

Flack recorded his third strikeout of the game as a part of a three up, three down fifth inning.

The Trojans quickly retired the three, four and five hitters for the Vikings to enter the sixth inning tied at three.

With one out in the top of the sixth, Trojan second baseman Mike Toomer reached first base on a Viking error.  Right fielder Billy Cullen hit a line drive to third base, but the ball hit the base to keep it in the infield.  However, the Vikings played strong defense and turned another double play to keep the score tied.

Yang hustled and beat out an infield single to start the bottom of the sixth.  Yang advanced to third on a single by right fielder Henry Kuhn, but was stranded there to end the inning.

Trojan catcher Danny Freshley and Menso walked to being the seventh inning.  An error would allow both players to advance one base, and another error with two outs, allowed them to score the Trojan’s fourth and fifth run.

Avayou singled to left center field in an attempt to start a Viking rally, but three straight outs would end the Viking’s hopes and game.

The boys look to rebound when the team takes on the Northwest Jaguars (5-1) at home on community night on April 8.
