Girls basketball falls to Gaithersburg, ends season

The Lady Vikes lost to the top-seeded and undefeated Gaithersburg Trojans, 81-39, to end their season on Mar. 3.

The Vikings played strong defense to start the game, forcing the Trojans to take a poor shot on their first offensive possession. However, the Lady Vikes committed a shot clock violation and struggled to move the ball on offense.

The Trojans built an early 4-0 lead, but forward Kristina Feldesman received a cross-court pass and put it up for a lay-up to pull the Lady Vikes within 2 points.

The Lady Trojans began to press the Vikings and apply heavy pressure. The Lady Vikes were unable to avoid turning the ball over and as a result, the Trojans went on a 16-0 to build an 18-point lead.

Both teams added 4 points to make the score 24-6 in favor of the Lady Trojans heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Trojans started the second quarter with a 6-0 run, but the Vikings suffered a key loss in center Whitney Kolakowski, when she went down with an ankle injury early in the period.

The Lady Vikes struggled to defend the faced paced Trojans and could not find the bottom of the net with their shots. Kolakowski reentered the game with 2:34 second left in the half, but the damage was done, as the Trojans had mounted a 28-point lead.

Guard Rachel Sisco added a free-throw to the Vikings score to make the deficit 44-15 heading into the locker room.

The Lady Trojans started the second half off with a deep 3-point shot, just 10 seconds into the period, to build the Viking deficit to 32 points. The Lady Vikes still struggled to move the ball towards the hoop, but got 3-pointers out of forward Clara Kelly and Sammy Harman.

3 3-pointers by the Lady Trojans in the third quarter propelled them to a 74-23 lead entering the final period of play.

Harman found an open shot and hit a 2-pointer to start off the fourth quarter. The Lady Vikes were able to contain the Trojan’s offense when guard Alex Purdy played relentless defense to hold them to 7 points in the quarter. Feldesman made 2 lay-ups in the final minutes to put the final score at 81-39.

Harman led the team in scoring with 8 points off the bench and all coming in the second half. Feldesman added 7 points of her own while Brewah and Kolakowski each had 6 points.

The Vikings lose two starting seniors in Kelly and Kolakowski, but return Brewah, Feldesman and Sisco from tonight’s starting line-up as well as gaining forward Angelica Ceccone, who tore her ACL against Northwest earlier in the year.
