For $500, juniors Hannah Storey and Grace Chandler bought the date of a lifetime — dinner with senior Nate Eckland at California Tortilla.
In the second annual Guy Auction Feb. 18, the SGA raised almost $7,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, about $3,000 more than last year’s event. Whitman’s finest senior and junior men offered appealing dates, ranging from a private concert to a Capitals game.
Because some of the boys didn’t take the winners on a date last year, the SGA required this year’s auctioned boys to sign a contract guaranteeing they’ll take the highest bidder out. If they don’t, the boys are required to reimburse the buyers for their money.
Freshman Marcela Falck-Bados, who has been diagnosed with Leukemia twice, urged students to support the cause.
“It’s been a really hard struggle, but at the same time, I still consider myself lucky because I’m here,” she said at the auction. “Most kids who have been diagnosed are stuck in a hospital. I really want people to donate money because I want other kids to have the opportunities that I have.”
Some of the pricier dates included seniors Campbell McCarthy and Connor Jabs’ date to the Golden Corral, which sold for $465 to sophomore Tara Biglari, junior Hawa Boyce and senior Safoora Biglari, and a custom date with juniors Nathan Golightly and Thomas Colton, which went for $425, to senior Haley Johnson and sophomore Mackenzie Dipman.
Chandler said she wanted to support the cause because of her mom, who had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
“I love CalTor and I fully expect the date to be really entertaining,” she said.“It’s kind of expensive but it’s for an amazing cause.”
