Pablo’s Parler: College rejection letters

Pablos+Parler%3A+College+rejection+letters

Welcome to the first podcast in a new series by graphic artist Pablo Ramirez. While college rejections are understandably upsetting, an anonymous senior dropped off a letter in the Black & White room March 19 to remind seniors that college isn’t the ultimate goal in life, though it may seem like it is during the tense days before decisions arrive April 1.

The letter referenced in the podcast can be found here.

@Revolutionist It is no longer just about what you know, it is about who you know. Which, while I dislike it, makes a lot of sense. You can be a super duper genius at solving multi-variable quantum physics equations but you don’t have an in to a job in that market. Your knowledge alone won’t get you the job. As I said before, it is the area we live in and the families many of us are born into that create a need to achieve to look good in the eyes of our family. I think you are exaggerating the aftermath of graduating college though.

todays society is just messed up. the fact that we need to go to a top notch school with a grand and widely recognized name if we hope to have a future is insane. so many people today graduate from college with good titles and cant find a job. basically this common hysteria for a perfect 4.00 and perfect scores on the act/sat can get you into a good college, and lets say that you graduate and you do pretty well there. well, nothing guarantees youll find a job, and now thats happening to hundreds of thousands of ppl arround the world. so all this stress will be for nothing, youll be in debt, and youll be living with your parents untill you get lucky and win the lottery or somthing. i say we start a revolution and change this.

I think that the real problem with students causing themselves more stress than they need is the environment we are raised in and the families we are born into. We live in a very wealthy town in the DC metro area, an area jam-packed with more lawyers, doctors, lobbyists, and government employees than you can shake a stick at. Our parents and their parents have now created a job and education environment in which accomplishment means everything. I realize I’m not going to the best school do to my grades but the fact is we go to a school where even the worst student here is better than many of the best students in other areas. I think this podcast should be more directed at the parents of students who push their children to absurd levels to succeed and live vicariously through their children.

Snobby schools like that really need to think of the self esteem issues they create.

On a more serious matter, this is an important aspect many of us do not look at before applying to colleges because we go to one of the best schools in the country. just because we go to a good school does not mean we’ll go to a top end college.
