The football team (2–2) stunned the Thomas Johnson Patriots (1–3) on Friday night, scoring late in the game to win on the road.
Thomas Johnson, looking to build off of their first win of the season, began the game with a 19-yard rushing touchdown to make the game 6–0 after a missed extra point. The Vikes couldn’t generate any offense on the next drive and punted back to the Patriot’s offense who also failed to score on their drive.
At the start of the second quarter, the Vikes had their best offensive possession of the game, marching down the field and scoring on an eight-yard receiving touchdown by senior Nate Sullivan. Late in the half, with the score still 6–6, senior Connor Werkman connected with senior Patch Bartleman on a 70-yard touchdown to give Whitman a 12–6 lead.
To begin the second half, the Patriots immediately marched down the field, scoring a two-yard rushing touchdown to take a 13–12 lead. Later in the quarter, senior Aidan Farber caught a 28-yard pass to put the Vikes in the red zone with senior Derrick Goodman scoring on a 19-yard touchdown pass shortly after to give Whitman a 19–13 lead.
Both defenses made stops in a competitive beginning to the fourth quarter before Thomas Johnson put together a scoring drive, giving them a 20-19 lead with under four minutes left. Needing a score, Werkman led the offense down the field and capped the drive off with a four-yard rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion, putting the Vikes up by a touchdown. The Vikes’ defense then made an impressive stop one last time to ice the game for Whitman.
After a thrilling road win, Whitman will look to continue their success when they host the Albert Einstein Titans (0–3) on Friday night at 7 p.m.
