The Vikings started off slow, taking only three shots in the first half, but despite their sluggish offense, the boys were able to keep the Rockets off the scoreboard with strong play from defenders Aaron May and Dominick Yin.
After halftime, the Vikes stepped up their offensive attack and closed out the game. Whitman took eight shots and had scoring chances early in the second half, including two consecutive attempts that ended up just wide of the goal.
Khagemba took advantage of a rare start and provided several breathtaking saves, including two late in the second half to preserve the shutout.
The team’s only goal came after the Rockets committed one of its ten penalties, setting up a free kick just outside the penalty box.
Midfielder Sam Lilek faked the kick and ran over the ball while defender Dominick Yin passed the ball to forward Sebastian Cahe as Lilek ran into the box unmarked. Cahe gave the ball to Lilek who was able to get a clean shot off. Rocket goalie Ethan Falk blocked the shot, but forward Jonny Mehrez was able to get the rebound and touch the ball into the back of the net.
The Viking defense held strong the rest of the game as Richard Montgomery was unable to create any promising chances, giving Whitman a 1-0 win.
The Vikes, who have only three regular season games remaining, are preparing for playoffs which begin Oct 30.
