Coach John Floyd graduated from Whitman in 2002 and played football. He now coaches Viking linemen and substitutes as a teacher at Whitman. Floyd, who is known for being funny in the classroom, also has a good coaching personality. He sat down with The Spectator recently for an interview.
The Spectator: So tell me more about coach Swink, your high school coach.
Floyd: Coach Swink was a second father figure to me, he had high energy. He was in your face and he was generally a good human being.
The Spectator: You graduated from Whitman?
Floyd: Yeah.
Spectator: Now you coach at Whitman and coach linemen?
Floyd: That’s right.
Spectator: You sub at Whitman, right?
Floyd: Right.
Spectator: How did you and Ross Kerr meet each other?
Floyd: I met Mr. Kerr at McDaniel College. He was a grade behind me; I was a senior and Ross Kerr was a junior.
Spectator: That’s good. How did you find him?
Floyd: I went to one of his shows, he plays drums.
Spectator: So that was the first time you two found each other?
Floyd: That’s how we met each other.
Spectator: So Coach Swink showed you how to play football at Whitman?
Floyd: Well, he was a second father figure to me and he was a good decent man. He was a phenomenal head coach.
Spectator: What positions did you play?
Floyd: In high school I played tight end, defensive end and punter. In college I played on the defensive line.
Spectator: Do you prefer to sub or coach?
Floyd: I like both, it’s too hard for me to decide.
