The Fulbright United States Student Program named Ezra Cohn (’06) a Fulbright scholar for the 2010-2011 academic year last month, and awarded him a fellowship for the next year. The program will allow Cohn, who recently graduated from Amherst, to teach English in Indonesia.

The Fulbright Program, created by Congress in 1946, gives grants to about 1,500 U.S. citizens to study or conduct research in more than 100 nations.

For his fellowship during the upcoming school year, Cohn will spend about 20 hours per week in Indonesia assisting high school teachers in teaching conversational English.

Through this experience, Cohn hopes to positively impact the students the students he will mentor.

“I want to teach my students English well and be a good ambassador for the United States,” he said. “I want my students to conclude from my example that Americans and America must be really cool, and I want them to be able to state that conclusion in English.”

Besides having the chance to interact with high school students, Cohn said he’s also very grateful for the chance to travel abroad, and looks forward to spending time in Indonesia.

“My character is contingent upon where and among whom I live,” he said. “By living in such a foreign environment, I should learn a lot about myself.”

After serving as a Fulbright fellow, Cohn says he plans to work for an organization involved in urban studies and social problems.
