Doubles teams Sarinah Wahl and Carina Greenberg and Jack Welch and Andrew Leung both walked away with state championship titles after winning the Maryland state tennis tournament Saturday.
After perfect 12–0 records in both team’s regular seasons, the players entered counties. After winning counties, both teams advanced to regionals. All four players advanced to the finals in their regions bracket, qualifying them to enter the MPSSAA state tournament.
“States is a lot more advanced than the regular season considering you’re playing against the best players in the state,” Leung said. “It’s definitely a lot more rewarding because you know that you can compete with the best of the best in a state-wide tournament.”
After a devastating loss last year in state finals, Welch and Leung were determined to redeem themselves this year, and did just that.
“Jack and I have definitely progressed as a team and are very pleased with our results from this year,” Leung said. “States is a great accomplishment and definitely looks great for our team and Whitman as a whole.”
While the boys are closing their season with states, it’s been a two season long break for the girls as their regular season occurs in the fall. During this hiatus, Greenberg and Wahl have been working hard to keep their tennis skills sharp.
“Sarinah and I have both been training on our own with our coaches,” Greenberg said. “We started playing together again just over this past month and practiced some doubles against the boys team.”
Their practice paid off as they continuously surpassed opponents throughout the day.
Players on both teams said they were thrilled with Saturday’s results, finishing their perfect seasons off with a win.
