The wrestling team cruised to victory at the Grapple at the Brook over the weekend; four wrestlers took first-place in their brackets and four others finished in the top five.
132lb James Bamberger, 145lb Mitch Fenton, 152lb Hamoon Shokoohinia and 170lb Marcos Solloso all prevailed in their weight classes, going undefeated in the process.
Shokoohinia and Solloso built on their fourth and fifth place finishes last year, and Fenton remained champion for the third straight season.
160lb Braedan McKee and 182lb Ezra Alexander notched top-three finishes, and 195lb John Luke Iglesias and 113lb Clark Boinis placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Boinis said that the team’s dominant start to its season carried over into its performance at the tournament.
“We had a lot of confidence coming into this tournament due to our success in county duals,” he said. “We knew that there were going to be some very tough schools there, and we wanted to show everyone that Whitman could compete with the best.”
The Vikings earned 184 points as a team, well above the second-place McLean Highlanders. The team improved on its 14-point, fourth-place showing last season.
Even more impressive was the fact that the win was an all-around effort, not just the result of one wrestler’s success, Boinis said.
“I was very impressed by the fact that almost everyone contributed to our team points, and no one wrestler carried us to first,” he said.
After a break from meets during exam week, the undefeated Vikings will compete in a tri-meet against Wootton and Damascus Saturday. Whitman vs Damascus is a highly anticipated meet, matching up the only two county teams who remained undefeated.
