The wrestling team finished third at the Patriot Classic at Northern High School this weekend, with eight wrestlers placing in their respective classes.
145lb Hamoon Shokoohinia and 152lb Mitch Fenton won their brackets handily, winning every match they wrestled. Shokoohinia pinned all four of his opponents, and Fenton won on three falls and a decision.
The two wrestlers avenged lower results at last year’s tournament: Fenton, who has reached the finals at the Classic for three straight seasons, placed second, and Shokoohinia placed fifth.
Shokoohinia said that his focus on fitness and work ethic propelled him from fifth last season to first this year.
“I have worked so hard in trying to get myself in the best wrestling shape and lose the insane 17 pounds to be able to wrestle at the weight I currently wrestle at,” he said. “Knowing the work I put [in] brought up my confidence and motivation.”
138lb James Bamberger and 170lb Marcos Solloso had top-three finishes, and 113lb Clark Boinis took home fourth place in his class.
The other Vikings who placed include: 106lb Chris Habibian, 160lb Braedan McKee, and 195lb John Luke Iglesias. All three wrestlers finished in fifth.
Overall, the team matched their third-place ranking from last season’s tournament but scored more total points.
The team will return to county play on Wednesday at 6:15 against the Sherwood Warriors (2–4).
