In Bethesda, a suburb filled with fitness aficionados and chic exercise studios, there are endless options for a solid workout. When it comes to the increasingly popular sport of spinning, Zengo Cycle and SoulCycle come in neck-and-neck as the best in Bethesda.
The rivalry between the two cycling hotspots is almost like a rivalry between two sports teams. Sports fans are passionately loyal to their teams, and the same is true for cycling enthusiasts.
Zengo Cycle is a local cycling chain with four locations around the DC/Maryland area. Classes last 50 minutes and cost $20, with the first class offered as a free trial. The rooms are dark and lined with mirrors, accompanied by a playlist of upbeat music.
SoulCycle, on the other hand, began in New York City in 2006 and has grown to 47 locations nationwide. Its 45 minutes of intensive cycling has attracted celebrities like Lady Gaga and like David Beckham, according to a SoulCycle press release. SoulCycle is the pricier of the two, costing $30 per class and $20 for the first ride. Their signature atmosphere is set by a pitch-dark room lit only by colorful candles with a unique mash-up of songs blasting from the speaker system. After class, showers and bathrooms are available to cyclists.
“The teachers [at SoulCycle] pump you up more and help you get more into cycling and make you work for a certain goal when you cycle,” said junior loyal SoulCycler, Julia Eisenberg, after having been to both classes.
While classes’ settings are very similar between the two studios, the vibes and characteristics of each are different. SoulCycle fans rave about instructors who push them, while Zengo fans love that they are not pressured to go as fast as the instructor and can go at their own pace.
“It’s not that difficult because you can have your own control over how hard you go,” senior Deanne Lewis said of Zengo classes.
Zengo offers a local feel and an individualized and independent workout. In contrast, SoulCycle feels like the national chain it is. The workouts are more interactive, with instructors circling the room throughout the ride and inspiring attendees to push themselves.
For exercisers that like the extra push and are willing to spend the money, SoulCycle is likely a better choice. On the flip side, for exercisers who want to save some money and like to move at their own pace, the right option is likely Zengo. Happy cycling.
