The school year is in its final stretch, and that, my friends, calls for celebration. What better way to celebrate a year of hard work and exams than with 98 minutes of horror and demons?
The Black & White previewed Leigh Whannell’s Insidious: Chapter 3, which premieres Friday June 5, 2015.
This prequel to the Insidious franchise features teen Quinn Brenner (Stephanie Scott), who turns to psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) in an attempt to connect with her late mother. Instead, Quinn finds herself the pet of a demon from “The Further”, a hell-like-place, as it viciously feasts off her mortal soul. Her father (Dermot Mulroney), Elise and a few friends struggle to keep Quinn from being dragged into “The Further” as she is persistently tortured, injured and possessed by this hauntingly terrifying force.
Scott is most well known for playing mean girl Lexi Reed on Disney Channel’s A.N.T. Farm, but in a conference-call interview with the Black & White, she explained she has moved passed her Disney years and could not feel more enthused about working in the horror film industry.
“I’m really into any kind of horror film […]I’m really into creepy things,” Scott joked.
To prepare Scott to play a lost and soon possessed teen, director and writer Whannell had her participate in multiple exercises including visiting a psychic and listening to emotionally provocative and dark music.
“He locked me in a dark room and made me listen to Swedish death metal,” Scott said.
Whannell had previously starred in Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, but this was his first time solely directing and thus, according to Scott, it was completely his voice.
“Insidious was his baby,” Scott said, “It’s fresh… and I think it’s definitely the darkest out of all of them.”
While it’s debatable what was the most terrifying aspect of the movie between the creepy demons, watching Quinn as she slept and the exorcist-like possession of her body, Scott believes that what will keep you up at night is a lot more simplistic than that.
“It’s different because it’s very real,” she said.
If you do decide to willingly horrify yourself, I suggest taking a friend for the walk back to the car, because—trust me—you won’t want to be alone.
