The baseball team dismantled the rival B-CC Barons 10–4 Monday, advancing to the sectional finals.
The Barons scored first, with a solo home run. Their one-run lead would stand through four innings.
But the Vikings roared back, scoring five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Infielder Sean Cook singled in the first run, which was followed by an RBI single from outfielder Ben Rosenblatt.
A balk by the Barons’ pitcher brought home the third run, quickly followed by catcher Patrick Cashmere knocking in another. First baseman Jack Prill got in on the action, finishing off the inning with an RBI double.
Outfielder Eric Wayman cited consistent hitting as a reason for the team’s success.
“The fifth inning was based solely off of good at bats and making the pitcher throw strikes,” he said. “They also ended up making a few mistakes, and we really capitalized on them.”
The Barons answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, cutting the Vikes’ lead to two runs.
Those runs would be overshadowed by another five-run inning in the top of the seventh. Cashmere and Prill each drove in runs, and Wayman blasted a three-run homer over the right field wall to cap off the inning.
It was his first home run, and the Vikings’ third of the season.
The win was also sweet revenge for the Vikings, who fell to B-CC 8–2 earlier in the season. Whitman was a heavy underdog coming into the game.
“No one expected us to win but ourselves, and that’s how we like it,” Prill said.
The Vikings look to advance to the regional finals when they travel to face Blair Wednesday at 7.
