The baseball team edged out the Northwest Jaguars 2–1 Thursday in extra innings, boosting their record to 7–5.
The game was a pitcher’s duel through the first seven innings, with Viking starter Sam Berson and the Jaguars’ starter each allowing just one run.
At the plate, the Vikings scored in the top of the second inning on a balk, and the Jaguars answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.
However, most of the excitement would come after the standard seven frames. Tied 1–1, the teams entered extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Vikings were able to crack the opposing pitcher, scoring the go-ahead run.
Catcher Evan Koretsky opened with a double, and was replaced by pinch-runner James Bamberger. Then, a single from outfielder Danny Mills drove Bamberger home for the winning score.
Koretsky said it was the drive of the team that carried them to the late victory.
“We knew we had to start something,” he said. “You can’t win a game scoring only one run.”
Reliever Dylan Hurd closed out the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Koretsky caught a Jaguar runner stealing second base to preserve the Vikes’ lead.
The Vikings will look to win their third straight game when they travel to face the Rockville Rams Saturday.
