The now 2-2 girls softball team ended their first week of games on a high note, thrashing the Gaithersburg Trojans 23-4 Thursday and the Northwood Gladiators 15-5 Saturday.
After losing the season’s first contests early last week, the Lady Vikes roared back with a winning vengeance.
The offensive frenzy was capped off by third baseman and senior captain Elena Kozak’s fifth inning grand slam against the Trojans. Fellow senior captain and second baseman Erin Ishimoto led the solid defense, jumping to snare a line drive above her head and running at full steam to reign in a pop fly between first base and home plate.
“The first two games were disappointing, but we played so well Thursday, and we feel like we’re locking into the season,” left fielder Gennie Anderson said.
The team’s confidence after Thursday’s defiant win carried through to Saturday against Northwood.
Kozak’s second grand slam in as many games led the Whitman offense, adding to her three early-season homers.
She was supported by command from Lady Vikes’ hurlers. Normally at shortstop, sophomore Jenny Williams pitched the first four innings, keeping Gladiators’ bats at bay. Pitcher Lauren Furst closed the game in the fifth to secure a second straight win for the Vikings.
The girls look for their third consecutive victory when the travel to face the defending state champion 4-0 Sherwood Warriors this afternoon.
