The now 0-2 the girls softball team started the season losing 15-1 against the Blake Bengals Monday and 20-10 to the Quince Orchard Cougars Tuesday in back-to-back games.
Strong defense, accurate pitching from senior captain Lauren Furst and an RBI-double from pitcher Taylor Shinaberry were not enough to counter the Bengals’ high-powered offense.
“We are playing really well, but Blake was just better,” outfielder Lauren Evoy said. “We need to be aggressive at bat and make sure we are working cohesively with one another in the field. Those are two main objectives we are going to be focusing on for improvement.”
After Friday’s game was postponed, the Vikings traveled to Quince Orchard and lost in a valiant effort. They were hot at the plate and the game was tied through the middle innings when the Cougars pulled away. Senior captain and third-basemen Elena Kozak’s one-run homerun in the third led the Vikings’ charge.
“We hit really well today,” leftfielder Gennie Anderson said. “We got the bats going and kept them going with impressive power and placement.”
Anderson believes the team just needs to continue to play tough in order to secure their first win of the season.
“We need to keep working on doing what we’re supposed to do out in the field and being aggressive both at bat and on defense,” Anderson said. “The score definitely doesn’t reflect how we played – we held them for the majority of the game but they had those lucky shots towards the end.”
The girls look to get into the win column when they travel to face the Gaithersburg Trojans Thursday.
