The wrestling season came to a close with the individual state tournament this past week. Qualifying two wrestlers, 145 pound Mitch Fenton and 152 pound Hamoon Shokoohinia, the Vikes had a strong ending to the season. Shokoohinia had a tough start, wrestling and falling to the defending state champion. However, he bounced back winning his next match with a second period pin.
“That is not too shabby for his first state tournament, and he has another shot next year,” Coach Derek Manon said.
Fenton, who was returning to the tournament after placing third last year, had an easy ride throughout the tournament dominating all of his opponents before getting into the quarter finals. There, Fenton fought a close match taking it all the way to triple overtime before losing by one point on a questionable no reversal call.
Additionally, during this match he was slammed onto the mat and received a concussion forcing him to forfeit his next match and claim fourth place.
This concussion puts an end to an injury marred season for Fenton, who missed a large portion of the regular season along with the county tournament due to illness. He still managed to qualify for states by earning a high enough ranking during the regular season.
The team will look to improve on their injury laden season next year, by returning all but four of their starters.
