“Justice League: Throne of Atlantis” offers exciting animation but weak plot

“Justice League: Throne of Atlantis” is the latest DC Animated Original Movie. Continuing off where 2014’s “Justice League: War” left off, the newly-formed Justice League must face-off against the evil Atlanteans and recruit Aquaman.

After the events of the previous film, the Justice League has been established, yet its members lack unity. However, the League is brought together when nobody Arthur Curry has to reclaim the Throne of Atlantis to stop an invasion of the surface world by his evil half brother, Prince Orm.

Though the film is titled “Justice League: Throne of Atlantis,” it felt more like an Aquaman movie than a Justice League film, with little to no time spent on the Justice League and its characters. The film also disappointed in that it greatly underused Batman, who didn’t throw a single punch during the entire movie—a stark contrast to previous films.

“Throne of Atlantis” really shines in its cast of characters, with not only the Justice League (Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, Shazam, and Cyborg), but also a whole host of Atlanteans including Ocean Master, Black Manta and Mera. Any comic book fan will be thrilled to see so many of their favorite characters brought onto the big screen.

As per usual with DC Animated films, the animation was filled with energy blasts, punches, and explosions.

Despite the fantastic animation and the thrilling cast of characters, the plot felt rushed, with Aquaman going from a drunk one minute to the King of Atlantis the next. This lack of character development and jumps in the plot seep through the glamour of the film. At a 72-minute run time, the convoluted side plots that plague this film are even more detrimental than usual.

Frankly, this film doesn’t match up with previous DC Animated films. The Flashpoint Paradox (2012) and Under The Red Hood (2011) were fantastic animated features with compelling plots and colorful animation and writing. In contrast, this movie could be considered underwhelming and sub-par.

If you’re a fan of the comics, checking out “Justice League: Throne of Atlantis” is definitely worth your time and effort on account of its action and cast of characters. Outside of that, the film is not really worth seeing, as there are better-animated DC flicks out there that do what this film does and much more. The film is now on Blu Ray and is available to stream online.
