Best holiday movies

As you sit on the couch on a cold, snowy winter’s night (hopefully there’s snow), you may find yourself searching through Netflix or On Demand, wondering what movie you can watch to get into the holiday mood.

If you’re like me, and you love snuggling up with a blanket, eating popcorn and drinking hot chocolate while watching movies, here is a list of great movies that will certainly get you into the holiday spirit.

1. Love Actually: By far the BEST holiday movie around, if you’re into that whole romantic, everything-works-out-in-the-end type of movie, like myself. Set in London, this movie follows nine separate love stories during the time leading up to Christmas. From the Prime Minister’s scandalous fling to an elementary schooler in love for the first time, “Love Actually” is bound to bring you laughter along with an achy feeling in your heart.

2. Elf: Almost everyone has seen “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell. An oversized elf named Buddy living in the North Pole leaves for New York City after learning that he is actually a human, not an elf. This comedy will result in you dying of laughter on the floor while making fun of Ferrell’s comedic attempts to be an elf standing at 6’3”.

3. Santa Clause: Another favorite, “Santa Clause” starring Tim Allen, focuses on a divorced Dad who somehow ends up killing the real Santa on Christmas Eve. He is then transported to the North Pole where he is bombarded by elves and forced to sign a binding clause saying he will now be Santa. As you watch, you may find yourself being transported back to the days of mystical creatures, the Easter bunny and believing in Santa.

4. The Polar Express: This movie proves that although some films aren’t realistic, they are still great. An animated movie about a young boy who doesn’t believe in Santa, “The Polar Express” follows this young boy around as he takes a late night train to the North Pole and meets Santa himself. A silver bell given to him by Santa helps him remember to believe, even when he gets older and has children of his own. While opening presents on Christmas morning, you must remember the important message to always believe.

5. Home Alone: A classic holiday story, minus the part about being with family. A young boy, left at home for Christmas as his forgetful parents go on a vacation to Paris, battles two burglars who attempt to steal money and valuable items from empty houses. Filled with hilarious tricks and pranks, Home Alone is a holiday classic perfect to please your inner child.
