Rent the Runway shop opens in Georgetown

Rent the Runway, the designer wear rental company, opened a shop in D.C. Nov. 20. Washingtonians can now physically browse through their designer options and get one-on-one help from in-store stylists.

Rent the Runway, a company that initially started out as an online business added its forth location in Georgetown this fall. The company allows buyers to rent out designer dresses, purses, and jewelry for a fraction of their purchase price, making it a popular way people get designer favorites for one-time occasions.

“We wanted to introduce ‘Rent the Runway’ in a neighborhood that fit our brand, which is really fun, friendly, exciting, and bright,” manager Damien West said. “D.C. worked out to be the perfect location to do that.”

Harvard Business School classmates Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Fleiss founded Rent the Runway in 2009. The business that started solely online has become extremely popular, and has grown to offer three other locations besides the store in Georgetown—two locations in New York and one in Las Vegas.

The Georgetown location is the largest at 4,000 square feet and is located at 3336 M Street NW, taking the place of the frame shop L’Eclat de Verre.

“I think everyone’s excited to come in because it’s like walking into the Vogue closet,” West said.

Many students use Rent the Runway for homecoming, prom, and other occasions. Senior Erin Craig has been happy with Rent the Runway and said she would use it again in the future.

“I used it for my last two homecomings as well as for some formal theater events and I’ve been really happy with it,” Craig said. “They are really good about telling you if a certain dress runs short or small or large.”

Senior Lily Carlson used Rent the Runway because she liked that she could get a nice dress for a reasonable price, she said. Carlson is optimistic about the new store.

“I think the store will be much easier than online because you don’t have to gamble with the dress sizes, especially because with Rent the Runway you get the dress only a few days before your event,” Carlson said.
