Horns blared and fans screamed as ska-punk band Streetlight Manifesto jammed their way through a concert at the Fillmore Silver Spring Sunday, the last show of their current tour.
The seven-piece band (guitar, bass guitar, drums, trombone, two saxophones, trumpet) is known for its jazz/rock/reggae genre of music and energetic playing style. They played in front of a packed house, to the delight of their dedicated fans.
Ten Whitman kids made the trek to see the show, which concluded at 11 p.m.
“I love the energy and sense of family at their concerts,” junior Joe Wiedemann said.
The Silver Spring show was the last leg of their Once More Into the Fray tour. The tour came as a surprise to many, after the band had announced they would stop touring last November.
“After this show, we stop touring for the foreseeable future…again,” lead singer Tomas Kalnoky said.
The band made headlines last year for deliberately boycotting itself. A record dispute with their company, Victory Records, led them to encourage fans not to buy their music so none of the money would go to the company, an unprecedented act of defiance.
Sunday’s concert featured songs from all four of its albums. Fans at the concert were treated to a fast-paced, energetic performance, which contributed to the excitement of Streetlight’s passionate fans.
“There’s a bond between the entire audience which I haven’t seen anywhere else,” Wiedemann said.
The group has stopped touring for now, but many people believe they’ll make a comeback, just like they did last year. If they keep giving performances like they did Sunday, I have little doubt that they can continue to do what they love for years to come.
