Netflix hidden gem: “The Cabin in the Woods”

Zombies, unicorns, killer clowns, snowmen, demons, giant snakes, merman, wraiths, mummies, killer undead rednecks, and an angry molesting tree. All of these monsters are featured in “The Cabin in the Woods.”

Released in 2012, “The Cabin in the Woods” is a modern take on the classic horror tale. The story follows five college students as they attempt a weekend getaway at a cabin in the woods. Once they reach the cabin, as the rules of the horror genre dictate, they must be attacked by some sort of supernatural creature or homicidal maniac. Things quickly get out of hand when the kids realize that the monsters are there for a reason and something is going on that is much larger than any of them.

The film effectively uses a talented cast, including Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Frank Kanz and Richard Jenkins. Frank Kanz stands out as stoner Marty Mikalski, who blazes through the movie on marijuana and paranoia.

The film’s strong suit lies in the plot twist that happens about midway through the movie. This twist is game-changing in the movie and will come as a surprise to all viewers.

When it was released in 2012, “The Cabin in the Woods” was met with rave reviews from critics, yet only met moderate success in the box office.

This film succeeds where most other films fail; it’s a successful parody of the horror genre that remains true to the genre in the process.

Viewer be warned, this film is extremely graphic and contains many violent and disturbing images, including death by unicorn.

With more than enough gore, monsters, and scares to satisfy even the most devout horror fan, “The Cabin in the Woods” is definitely worth spending the time to watch on Netflix.
