Despite losing to the Clarksburg Coyotes 14-3 at home this Monday, the softball team held a celebration for thier sole senior and first baseman Cheyenne Bartolomei on her senior night.
Bartolomei, a varsity player since freshman year, was recognized for her dedication to the team during the pregame ceremony.
“I was nervous about being the only senior this year, but I have incredible juniors that stepped up and were able to help me out,” Bartolomei said. “[We] all bonded so much and got incredibly close … the girls all wrote letters to me with their favorite memories [with me], and it made me realize how much I’m going to miss every single person.”
Senior outfielder Laurie Kostecka led the Coyotes’ offense with a three-run homer in the first inning, a three-run triple in the third, and an RBI single in the fourth.
Leftfielder Gennie Anderson had an RBI single, run and three stolen bases in the loss.
Catcher Olivia Weals said that the team struggled to get their bats going, despite fighting hard and playing well overall.
“Senior night games are always bittersweet. We love to celebrate with our seniors, but it’s also a pretty sad time because we actually start to feel the end of the season approaching,” Weals said. “It’s sad to see [Cheyenne] leave, but we all love [her] dearly, and she’s going to do great things, I’m sure of it.”
The 4-12 Vikings will host the Churchill Bulldogs in the first round of the playoffs this Thursday.
