As the lights flicker, indicating the beginning of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” audience members rush to find their seats. The entire room falls dark and silent as the play begins.
The play starts off with Orlando (junior Alex Xourious), wrestling against a court wrestler, Charles (senior Kevin Grant). However, Orlando’s brother Oliver (senior Chris Johnston) convinces Charles that Orlando will cheat. The play’s beginning set an enthusiastic tone for the rest of the play.
The play was set in the Woodstock era, which was exemplified by bright-colored tight pants and numerous peace signs.
The stage was simple, yet well done; the curtains opened up to display flowers and trees resembling the woods in which Rosalind (senior Molly Bennett) and her cousin Celia (senior Ronnie Foreman) are banished to.
The lighting and sound team also played a large part in the success of the show—lighting was always on cue. The music consisted of classic Beatles songs and other oldies, which conveyed a more modern interpretation of the show. The songs played in between each scene, adding a nice touch to the hippie theme.
As the play developed and the characters evolved, all the talent was brought to the stage by each performer. Bennett knew how to evoke emotion from the audience, while making her character seem real.
Another outstanding character was Touchstone (junior Michael Nguyen-Mason) who provided constant comic relief. With his tight white pants and shirts he knew how to walk and talk to make the audience tear up from laughter.
Every character brought a little something of their own to the show, making a well-known play unique and entertaining. The Shakespeare Club definitely pulled off another great performance.
