After a huge comeback in the sixth inning, the baseball team won its second game in a row on Saturday, defeating Walter Johnson 9-8.
With the win, the Vikes’ record improved to 3-2 while WJ’s fell to 1-4.
After starting off hot, the Vikes were up 4-0 after the top of the third. Then, a few walks and questionable defense would allow the Wildcats to put up three runs in the third and five runs in the fifth.
At the start of the sixth inning, the Vikings were down 8-6 and needed their bats to come alive to win the game.
Luckily for the Vikes, catcher Max Vogel and second baseman Ben Castagnetti had big hits in the sixth, helping the Vikes score three runs to take the lead. Castagnetti led the team with three RBIs on the day while Vogel knocked two in. Both were 2-3 with a double.
Third baseman Alex Clark also hit well for the Vikes with three hits.
Weak defense plagued the Vikings. They had four errors and as a result, five of WJ’s eight runs were unearned.
“We need to be more confident,” right-fielder Daniel Clayton said. “We are one of the top defensive teams in the league.”
Alex Cladouhous started the game on the mound for the Vikings, throwing three innings and giving up five runs with only two earned. In the fourth, Max Palermo came in and pitched the final four innings. He gave up three runs with one earned.
The Vikes hope to continue their win streak Monday when they travel to play the Churchill Bulldogs.
