The baseball team got back into the win column Thursday night, defeating Richard Montgomery 5-2.
The Vikings’ record improved to 2-3 while Richard Montgomery’s fell to 2-2.
The Vikes’ defense impressed and saved a number of runs. Catcher Max Vogel threw a runner out at second and later caught someone stealing home. Also, centerfielder Drew Aherne turned a rare double-play from the outfield, catching a fly ball and then gunning down a runner on first base before he could tag up.
“We executed really well tonight,” Vogel said.
The Vikes started the game off slowly, giving a run up in each of the first two innings.
Then the Vikings’ bats came alive. They scored five runs over the second and third innings to put the game away.
Vogel and Aherne also had a good night in the batters box. Vogel had a double and Aherne had a triple.
The pitchers continued their impressive start to the season. Alex Lesley started on the mound for the Vikes, throwing three innings, giving up two runs with two strikeouts and no walks. Sean Cook then came in and pitched three strong shutout innings before Max Palermo closed out the game in the seventh.
“We have had awesome pitching and a solid defense the entire season so far,” Castagnetti said. “Even though we have had a tough time at the plate, our pitchers have thrown strikes and we have made plays in the field.”
The Vikings play their next game Saturday, when they travel to Walter Johnson to face the Wildcats.
