After a successful regular season filled with electrifying play and strong team chemistry, the hockey team lost to Churchill, 3-1, in the regional semi-finals, ending its playoff hopes.
The game continued the streak of close, hard fought matchups between the two teams since the teams tied the last time they played.
The two teams’ defenses were on showcase early with neither team scoring in the first period.
Churchill would then control the second, scoring twice and putting the Vikes in a tough position towards the end of the period.
The Vikings would fight back with just over a minute left in the second period when forward Michael Voehl snuck one past the Churchill goalie.
The game’s momentum would switch again, however, when the Bulldogs scored early in the third. Their strong defensive play then closed out the game.
The Vikes struggled all game to create scoring chances, only mustering 13 shots on goal.
Despite the disappointing end to the season, it was still a rewarding year for the team.
“We had some great moments,” forward Andy Dexter said. “Then there were the times where we knew we had to be better.”
It was an especially important season for Dexter because of the chance for him to play with his brother Sam.
“It was the first time we’ve ever played together,” Dexter said. “We connected great on the ice.”
While Sam will get many more chances to play in a Viking uniform, for Andy and the rest of the seniors, it’s an emotional end to a great run.
