Chocolate bark is a versatile, easy dessert to make this holiday season. Whether you make the classic peppermint version or try a sweet and salty bark, it’s sure to be a hit with friends and family. Photo by Julia Maman.

Ingredients

PEPPERMINT BARK
  • 12 oz dark chocolate chips
  •  12 oz white chocolate chips
  •  8-10 peppermint candy canes
COOKIES AND CREAM BARK
  • 12 oz white chocolate chips
  • 9-12 Oreo cookies
SALTY AND SWEET BARK
  • 12 oz milk chocolate chips
  • 1 cup salty peanuts or mixed nuts

Directions

  1. Prepare a large rectangular pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
  2. Either melt the chocolate over the stove in a double-boiler over low to medium heat or microwave the chips for 30 seconds. Then stir with a rubber spatula. Continue microwaving and stirring at 30-second intervals until melted, 3 to 5 minutes total.
  3. For the peppermint bark, put the 8-12 candy canes in a plastic bag and mash them into small bits with a wooden mallet. You can also use a blender if preferred. Do the same for the Oreos, the cookies and cream bark.
  4. Spread the chocolate evenly on the prepared pan. The chocolate should be about 1/8 of an inch thick when spread. It is okay if the chocolate doesn’t cover the entire pan. For the peppermint bark, layer the white chocolate over the dark and mix together for a marbled look.
  5. Add the toppings of your choice. Press down gently to make sure the toppings stick. For the cookies and cream bark, mix the Oreos in with the white chocolate and sprinkle chunkier pieces on top.
  6. Put the pans in the fridge and let sit for about an hour before breaking into uneven pieces. To break the chocolate either use your hands or use a knife and a mallet. The more uneven, the better.
  7. You are done! Keep them refrigerated and enjoy them this holiday season!
