The varsity ice hockey team continued its strong start Friday night, with a 6-1 victory over the Sherwood Warriors.
The Vikes’ record improved to 2-0 and Sherwood’s fell to 0-1.
In the first period, the Vikings started off slowly, going down 1-0 ten minutes into the game.
Eventually, however, the Vikes would take control, scoring six goals unanswered. The Vikings capitalized on their deep bench for the game. Their frequent line changes made sure the energy was always up.
Forward Hunter Marder scored the Vikings’ first goal of the game, just under a minute before the end of the first period.
Marder played well throughout the game, contributing to a goal in each period. In the second period, Marder assisted forward Matt LeBeau on Whitman’s second goal and in the third, Marder scored again. He currently leads the Vikings with four goals on the season.
Goalie Zach Butler ensured the Vikes’ victory with many key saves on Sherwood scoring chances and stopped 21 shots.
“We played well defensively especially when they had a 5 on 3 power play,” Captain and forward Ethan Weintraub said. “We also capitalized on our offensive opportunities”
The team will strap its skates on next when it takes on the Wootton Patriots, Wednesday Nov. 20 at Wheaton. Both teams are currently undefeated on the season and Wootton won its last game 14-0 against Richard Montgomery.
