Girls tennis team member Kamilla Beisenova got revenge against Wootton star Miranda Deng to win the number one singles regional championship.
The finals were held on Oct. 30 where Beisenova and Deng faced off for the third time this season. Deng had taken the first two matches against Beisenova, 7-6, 6-4, in their first meeting during the regular season, and 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in the county championship last week.
This time, however, was different with Beisenova finally defeating Deng in their biggest match of the season in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
“I went in with a different strategy and really tried to focus on every point,” Beisenova said. “I feel like before I wasn’t focused enough since she’s my friend and it’s hard to play friends.”
While Beisenova and Deng have played together for the past few years and train together throughout the year, the win is still big for Beisenova.
“I’m really happy since she’s a really good tennis players and she’s really tough to play against,” Beisenova said. “To finally beat her means a lot.”
Beisenova made her return to Whitman tennis this season after a season off to work on recruiting. Upon her return, she immediately gave the team a boost as their number one singles player and improved its 2012 record, finishing 10-2 this season.
Beisenova, however, did not have any expectations of winning the region.
“I didn’t really have any goals going into the season,” Beisenova said. “I just wanted to play well and improve.”
Since Beisenova won the region, she also has qualified for the state tournament beginning in the spring.
