With stands packed tight with students, parents and alumni alike, the football team won their homecoming game against Walter Johnson 34-3.
WJ scored first, with a field goal early in the first quarter. Whitman then took the lead with Zac Morton rushing a touchdown in the second and putting the game away with 27 points in the fourth.
Whitman’s record improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in their division. Walter Johnson fell to 0-8.
The Vikings defense played exceedingly well, completely shutting down the WJ offense after the early field goal.
Morton again played a workhorse role for the Vikes on offense and his final stats were impressive. He finished with 219 yards on 31 carries with three touchdowns.
Morton now has over 1300 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season. His rushing total remains the highest of anyone in Montgomery County.
Morton wasn’t the only Viking on offense to play well.
Quarterback Evan Smith was effective, finishing 7-11 with a touchdown and an interception. His completion percentage was the highest since the B-CC game early in the season.
Smith’s touchdown was a 19-yard strike to wide receiver Nick Newsham.
Whitman’s last touchdown of the game was also the most explosive. Running back Nick Panlibuton put the moves on with a 50-yard touchdown run. It was Panlibuton’s first touchdown of his career.
“Scoring was amazing,” Panlibuton said. “Especially in front of the huge crowd for the homecoming game.”
These past two games—including the win against Springbrook—have been key for the Vikings playoff hopes.
“We have to win out if we want to make the playoffs,” Smith said.
The Vikes have two games remaining, Nov. 1 against Churchill at home and Nov. 8 at Blair.
