In front of seemingly countless Whitmaniacs and Maryland football star Stefon Diggs who was standing on the other sideline, the Viking football team fell to the Wootton Patriots, 43-20 last night. Wootton’s record improves to 4-0 while the Vikes fall to 2-2.
It was a back-and-forth game for most of the first half but Wootton pulled away late in the second quarter and never looked back. Wootton scored the only 13 points of the second half.
The second quarter was the game’s climax with 36 combined points between the two teams. The quarter started with 85-yard touchdowns scored by each team. Wide receiver Nick Newsham scored Whitman’s with a long pass from quarterback Evan Smith.
The Whitman defense had a tough time dealing with Wootton’s high-octane passing game. Wootton quarterback Sam Ellis finished the game with 330 yards and four touchdowns. Ellis leads the metro area with 1,319 yards on the season.
A bright spot for the Vikings was running back Zac Morton. He finished with an impressive 197 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns.
“Next game we need to improve on our mistakes from last game and execute on both sides of the ball,” tight-end Anton Casey said.
The Vikings hope to rebound next Friday night when they host Richard Montgomery.
