After winning its season opener last week against Blake, the football team dropped its record to 1-1 after a loss to the Quince Orchard Cougars at home.
The final score tallied up to 42-0, but the Cougars scored 35 of their points in the first half. Quince Orchard entered the contest ranked as the third best team in the area (public or private) by the Washington Post.
The Vikings struggled to make tackles, giving up many long touchdowns where the ball carrier was initially hit close to the line of scrimmage. Quince Orchard running-back Kevin Joppy had 118 yards on only nine carries in the first half.
After a strong first game, the Vikes’ offense had a tough time getting anything going. Junior quarterback Evan Smith threw two interceptions and completed less than half of his passes.
Senior running back Zac Morton also struggled and failed to break off any of his trademark long runs. He ended with 52 yards on 13 carries. As a result, the Vikings failed to move the ball down the field and only had four first downs.
The Vikings look to bounce back with a game against rivals BCC Saturday, September 21.
“We need to work on our communication,” junior lineman Jonah Brain said. “And we have to have more heart.”
