While the Ravens’ opening game could not have gone much worse, the Vikes’ first football game could not have gone much better.
The Vikings defeated the Blake Bengals by a final score of 28-0. The Vikes dominated all facets of the game with three touchdowns from the offense, a punt return touchdown from the special teams, and a shutout from the defense.
All eyes were on the new quarterback, junior Evan Smith, and he did not disappoint. Smith connected with senior Zac Morton for a long touchdown pass in the second quarter and scored on a QB sneak after halftime. Smith finished 12-20 for 187 yards and a touchdown.
“Morton was lined up in the middle of the field, ran a seam route and Evan [Smith] hit him in stride for a touchdown,” junior Alex Hosker said.
Senior Nick Newsham started the scoring for the Vikes with a punt-return touchdown in the first quarter.
After a Division 4A leading 1,383 rushing yards in 2012 and a shout-out from the Gazette for being one of the county’s game changers, Morton entered the game with high expectations. He finished with 112 rushing yards and 107 receiving yards rushing and receiving yards with two touchdowns.
“It was exciting to see all the hard work we put in as a team pay off,” Smith said.
The Vikings look to remain undefeated when they take on Quince Orchard for their home opener next Thursday.
