The boys basketball team fought hard for an exciting win over the 10-12 Clarksburg Coyotes 61-60 in its final game of the regular season Feb. 19, ending with a 13-9 record.

As the last home game of the regular season, the match was senior night for forwards Daniel Lowet, Andrew Castagnetti and Liam Hatch, as well as guards Billy Lee, Robby Lund and Samir Kaveeshwar. Tributes to the graduating players came in the form of posters made by teammates, as well as a pregame introduction for all of the seniors and bios read by coach Chris Lun.
The boys started off slow, falling into an 11-0 hole in the first four minutes. Stingy team defense and solid rebounding helped the team overcome its early deficit.
Coyotes guard Dennis Singleton Jr. scored 21 points and kept Clarksburg in the game, but the combination of Castagnetti and Lowet proved to be too much as they scored 12 points each. Guards Max Steinhorn and Liam Hatch added 12 and 9 points respectively.
Whitman took its first lead of the game with five minutes left in the fourth quarter and never gave it up. An 8-0 run by the Vikings midway through the quarter put them up for good, and the Vikes won their fourth consecutive game.
“This was a big win for us,” Castagnetti said. “It gives us a lot of momentum going into the playoffs.”
The team travels to take on the 10-12 Walter Johnson Wildcats in its first playoff game February 26.
