Viking Vogue: Master the summer-to-fall transition

Seventy-one degrees, partly cloudy, 40 percent humidity, 20 percent chance of precipitation. On days like this, you’ve got a dilemma: what to wear?

If you choose a short-sleeve you might get too cold; your jackets don’t match anything; Mr. Gohn never has his air conditioning on so a long-sleeve is out of the question and you don’t even want to think about closed-toed versus open-toed shoes. These transition days between summer and fall are by far the most awkward for dressing, and no one knows for sure what to put on every morning. Hopefully, these fashion tips will help you out one morning.

Invest in scarves. With so many colors and patterns and fabrics to choose from, there are bound to be a few scarves you like somewhere. You can buy thin ones for a pop of color or thick ones that simultaneously keep you stylish and warm. Scarves are great to pair with a V-neck shirt or blouse, because they keep you warm on those days when you know you need something but don’t want to commit to a sweater. You can also remove and replace them throughout the day, depending on how you feel in every class. And once the weather gets colder, they’ll go great with sweaters, or jackets. Scarves are so versatile they don’t have an assigned “look,” so feel free to wear them with shorts or flip-flops on warmer days.

Tights might be just right. Just because the weather is getting cooler, doesn’t mean you have to stash away your cutest skirts and dresses. Chances are most of them will go perfectly with some tights, boots and a sweater. Colored tights can break up the monotone in a dress or skirt that’s just one color. More fancy, textured tights can also add something interesting and unique to an outfit.

Legit leg warmers. As shocking as it may be, leg warmers are not just for 80’s day. American Apparel and several other places sell cute wooly leg warmers that go great under boots. If you really want to keep the heat in, wear another pair of long socks underneath the leg warmers. Then nothing will give you cold feet, not even the risk of looking like your mom in her high school yearbook.

You need accessories like these for the days that look like summer but feel like fall. Mixing up the styles of these accessories will also add more originality and possibilities to your wardrobe, so don’t hesitate to go bold.
