The boys soccer team excelled in its first taste of county competition this season, defeating the 0-1 Rockville Rams 4-0 Sept. 4 and improving its record to 2-0.
The Vikes were frustrated with the quality of the Rockville field, but came out strong, with forward Luke Barber scoring three minutes after the opening whistle. Strong defense secured a 1-0 Viking lead at halftime.
“I think their field was our toughest opponent,” captain Spencer Meschter said. “Once we got used to it we dominated.”
Whitman erased any expectations of a close game early in the second half, as midfielder Olivier Petermann found the back of the net three minutes in. Defenders Meschter and Nathan Rackstraw closed out the scoring with back to back goals 20 minutes later.
Over its first two games the team has had superb play on both sides of the ball, letting in only one goal while scoring seven.
The Vikes will put their undefeated record on the line Sept. 10 at home against the Clarksburg Coyotes.
